12 Questions Every Couple Should Ask Before Booking a Wedding Photographer in the Western Cape.

Choosing your wedding photographer is about so much more than finding someone whose photos you like.

Your photographer will spend more time with you than almost any other supplier on your wedding day. They will be there during some of the most emotional moments, helping you stay calm, keeping your timeline on track and preserving memories that cannot be recreated.

Whether you are getting married in Cape Town, the Winelands or anywhere else in the Western Cape, these are the questions every couple should ask before booking.

1. How would you describe your photography style?

Every photographer sees a wedding differently.

Some focus on dramatic editorial portraits. Others create highly posed images, while some work in a documentary style, capturing the day as it naturally unfolds.

Look through complete galleries, not just Instagram highlights, to make sure their style matches what you imagine for your wedding.

What you should look for

If you love relaxed, timeless photographs that feel like real memories, choose someone whose work consistently reflects that style. A photographer should not only create beautiful portraits but also capture the genuine moments in between.

2. Do you have experience photographing camera-shy couples?

This is one of the most overlooked questions.

Most couples are not professional models. In fact, almost every couple says the same thing during our first conversation.

"We are awkward in front of the camera."

A good photographer knows this and has a way of helping you relax without making you feel like you are performing.

What you should look for

Ask how they guide couples during portraits. The goal is not to memorise poses. It is to work with someone who makes the experience feel easy so your expressions stay genuine.

3. Will You Be the Photographer Shooting Our Wedding?

If you are booking through a larger photography studio, the person you meet during your consultation may not be the photographer who arrives on your wedding day.

There is nothing wrong with associate photographers, but you should know exactly who you are booking.

What you should look for

Ask who will photograph your wedding and whether you can see galleries from that specific photographer.

If you are booking me, I will personally photograph your wedding from start to finish. If you choose to add a second photographer, they simply help capture extra moments while I remain your lead photographer

4. Can we see a full wedding gallery?

Instagram is a highlight reel.

Every photographer shares their very best images online, but your wedding is not made up of twenty perfect photographs. It is made up of hundreds of moments across an entire day.

What you should look for

Ask to see at least two or three complete wedding galleries.

Pay attention to how they photograph the ceremony, family photos, reception, details and evening celebrations. Consistency is far more important than a handful of beautiful images.

5. Do you offer photography and videography?

If you are planning to book both photography and videography, it is worth asking how they work together.

Some photographers work with trusted videographers while others offer both services themselves.

What you should look for

The most important thing is that your photographer and videographer communicate well and work together without getting in each others way.

I offer both photography and videography, making the experience simple while keeping a consistent style across both your photographs and your wedding film.

6. What is included in your packages?

Every photographer includes something different.

Some packages include travel, while others charge separately. Some include engagement sessions, albums or sneak peeks, while others do not.

What you should look for

Make sure you understand exactly what is included before paying your booking fee.

Ask about travel costs, delivery timelines, editing, online galleries and whether there are any additional fees.

7. How do you help couples prepare before the wedding?

Great wedding photography starts long before the wedding day.

Preparation helps everything run more smoothly and allows you to spend more time enjoying your day.

What you should look for

Ask whether they provide planning advice, timeline guidance or engagement sessions.

A photographer who helps with planning often creates a much more relaxed experience on the wedding day.

8. What happens if it rains?

Western Cape weather is beautiful, but it can also change quickly.

A little rain should never ruin your wedding photographs.

What you should look for

Ask what their backup plan is.

An experienced photographer will already have alternative locations, indoor options and creative ideas ready if the weather changes unexpectedly.

9. How long will it take to receive our photos?

Every photographer has a different editing process.

Some deliver within a few weeks while others take several months.

What you should look for

Ask for realistic delivery times before booking.

I deliver a sneak peek gallery within a few days, often sooner, and your full gallery is delivered within eight weeks so you can start enjoying your memories while the excitement is still fresh.

10. Can you provide references from your last two weddings?

Online reviews are helpful, but sometimes it is reassuring to hear directly from another couple.

Most professional photographers are happy to connect you with recent clients who have agreed to share their experience.

What you should look for

Ask about communication, professionalism, punctuality and whether the photographer delivered everything they promised.

Those conversations often tell you far more than a five star review.

11. Can we see a copy of your contract?

A professional photographer should always provide a written contract.

It protects both you and your photographer and clearly explains what happens if plans change.

What you should look for

Your contract should explain payment schedules, cancellation policies, delivery timelines, backup plans in case of illness, image usage and exactly what is included in your booking.

Never feel uncomfortable asking to read the contract before paying your booking fee.

12. Why do you photograph weddings?

This might sound like a simple question, but it often tells you a lot about the person behind the camera.

Technical skill is important, but so is genuine passion for people.

What you should look for

Choose someone whose answer focuses on couples, relationships and preserving memories rather than just cameras and equipment.

Do Your Own Research

Before booking any wedding supplier, spend a little time doing your own research.

A few extra minutes now can save you a lot of stress later.

Here are a few things worth doing:

  • Read Google Reviews as well as Facebook reviews.
  • Look beyond the testimonials on their own website.
  • Ask your venue coordinator if they have worked with them before.
  • Ask your planner, florist, DJ or other wedding suppliers for their opinion. The wedding industry is surprisingly small, and experienced suppliers usually know who is reliable and professional.
  • Look through complete wedding galleries instead of only social media posts.
  • Pay attention to how they communicate. Do they respond promptly? Are they organised? Do they make you feel comfortable?

Trust your instincts. If something feels off during the booking process, it is usually worth paying attention.

A Word About Huge Discounts and Cheap Wedding Photography

Every couple has a budget, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with looking for good value. A photographer does not have to be the most expensive to deliver beautiful work.

However, it is worth paying attention when you see unusually large discounts or prices that seem too good to be true.

There is a big difference between a genuine promotion and a photographer who is constantly advertising 40%, 50% or even 70% off.

For example, a once off wedding expo special, a local venue promotion, a seasonal winter offer or a discount offered through another wedding supplier can all be perfectly legitimate marketing. These are often planned campaigns with clear start and end dates.

What should make you curious is when a photographer always seems to be heavily discounted.

Ask yourself:

  • Why is this package discounted so much?
  • Is this actually a special, or is this simply the normal price dressed up as a promotion?
  • Are they struggling to get bookings?
  • Have they recently entered the industry and are still building experience?
  • Is something important being removed from the package to achieve that price?

Running a professional wedding photography business comes with significant costs. Professional cameras and lenses, backup equipment, insurance, editing software, secure storage, travel and many hours of editing all form part of the service you are paying for.A photographer who consistently offers huge discounts may be cutting corners somewhere, or they may simply be trying to fill an empty calendar. While that is not always a red flag, it is worth asking a few more questions before booking.

The same applies to photographers whose prices are significantly lower than most others in the same area.

That does not automatically mean they are a poor photographer. Every experienced professional was once a beginner, and there are talented photographers who charge less while building their portfolio.

The important thing is to understand why the price is lower.

Photography is one of the few parts of your wedding that cannot be recreated. Once the day is over, those moments are gone forever. Choose your photographer because you trust them and feel confident in their experience, not simply because they offered the biggest discount.

Final Thoughts

The right wedding photographer is about more than beautiful images.

You deserve someone who helps you feel comfortable, communicates clearly, prepares you well and captures your day in a way that feels natural.

Do not be afraid to ask questions. A professional photographer will always welcome them because they want you to feel completely confident before booking.
